Fresh Kitchen Contest 2013: Editor's Choice

Leap of Faith: A house that some potential buyers considered a tear down became the perfect home for a couple with a lot of vision.

Light floods the kitchen from a bank of windows overlooking the garden courtyard. Counter seating offers a nice spot for conversation and plenty of room for gathering with friends and family. With white as a backdrop, any color makes a great accent. Kathleen’s favorite kitchen accessory—her blue stockpot—becomes a pretty focal point with a blue platter and blue hydrangeas.

Bryan Boudreaux made a bold move when he bought a house without wife Kathleen ever seeing it. It was a buy it or lose it situation as numerous offers were on the table.  So Kathleen agreed to trust Bryan’s instincts. Afterall, it wasn’t their first renovation. Thank goodness Kathleen saw the same potential her husband did.

“We purchased the house from the original owner/architect, who designed the house almost 75 years ago. We loved the traditional feel and character of the residence, and we wanted to stay true to that,” Bryan says. While most walls stayed intact, the couple updated throughout with the kitchen being a major focus. “We extended the kitchen by a few feet while incorporating modern amenities and making the kitchen function well for a growing family and gatherings with friends,” Bryan says.

Jason Brewer of Brewer Cabinets stepped in to help. Crisp white custom cabinetry with beaded inset doors complements the couple’s choice of countertops—steel-gray honed granite on the perimeter and honed statuary marble on the island. Details such as the stove’s backsplash and stainless appliances are classic fixtures that suit the house and work well for any decor. “Now we have people knocking on the door expressing interest in the house just as it is.,” Bryan says. With the renovation of the kitchen and other spaces, the home is now perfect just as it is.
